HTV vs. Sublimation:

admin February 15, 2024 0 comments

Choosing the Best Method for Your Custom Shirts

At Frankie&Co., we understand that choosing the right printing method for your custom shirts can make a big difference in the final product. Two popular methods we use are HTV (Heat Transfer Vinyl) and sublimation. Each has its own advantages and ideal use cases. Let’s dive into the differences, pros, and cons of each method to help you decide which one is right for your needs.

Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV)

What is HTV? HTV involves cutting designs out of colored vinyl sheets and then heat-pressing them onto fabric. This method is versatile and can be used on a wide variety of materials.

Pros of HTV:

  1. Versatility: HTV works on a variety of fabrics, including cotton, polyester, and blends.
  2. Durability: The designs are long-lasting and can withstand many washes without significant fading.
  3. Vibrant Colors: HTV offers bright, solid colors that stand out on any shirt.
  4. Special Effects: You can use glitter, metallic, and holographic vinyls for unique effects.

Cons of HTV:

  1. Complex Designs: Intricate designs can be challenging to cut and weed (remove excess vinyl).
  2. Layering: Multiple layers can make the design feel heavy and stiff.
  3. Time-Consuming: The process of cutting, weeding, and pressing each design can be time-consuming, especially for large orders.

Sublimation

What is Sublimation? Sublimation printing uses heat to transfer dye directly into the fibers of polyester fabrics. This method works best on light-colored garments.

Pros of Sublimation:

  1. High Detail: Sublimation allows for highly detailed and photorealistic prints.
  2. Soft Feel: The dye becomes part of the fabric, resulting in a soft, breathable print that doesn’t fade or crack.
  3. Full-Color Range: You can use any color, including gradients and intricate patterns.
  4. Durability: Sublimation prints are very durable and withstand many washes without fading.

Cons of Sublimation:

  1. Fabric Limitation: Works best on polyester or poly-blend fabrics; doesn’t work on cotton.
  2. Color Limitation: Best suited for white or light-colored garments as the ink is transparent.
  3. Initial Cost: Requires specialized equipment and inks, which can be a higher upfront investment.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose HTV if:

  • You need to print on a variety of fabrics, including cotton.
  • You want vibrant, solid colors and special effects like glitter or metallic.
  • You have simple designs that don’t require high detail.

Choose Sublimation if:

  • You are printing on polyester or poly-blend fabrics.
  • You want high-detail, full-color prints that are soft and breathable.
  • You are working with light-colored garments and need durable prints.
